Whitestone crowned 2017 MCS Old Mutual Rugby10s Champions

Whitestone Junior School from Bulawayo was on Saturday crowned the 2017 Midlands Christian School (MCS) Old Mutual Rugby 10s tournament champions after beating Goldridge A in the finals.
A total of 14 schools with 16 teams from the initial expected 20 schools took part in this year’s edition with MCS and Goldridge providing two teams each.
Whitestone, who were awarded the most spirited team in 2015 this time around finished the tournament tops unbeaten after playing eight matches, followed by Goldridge A with seven victories and a loss in the finals.
Whitestone coach Takudzwa Gamanya said  the aim of primary school rugby is to have fun and enjoy which they did and cannot wait for next year’s edition as a stronger squad is coming up in the form of the Colts sides.
“It’s a good thing we played well and came all the way here and won. We managed to play to what we had actually practiced and I think that was the key to us winning today,” he said.
Old Mutual representative and core founder of the 10s festival Zwelonke Mloiswa promised to make the tournament the biggest primary schools rugby festival in the country and welcomed this year’s debutants Sogwala, who were awarded a trophy for being the most spirited team, and Pathway Primary schools.
He said a clash in the rugby calendar prompted other expected schools not to show up.
“Some of the other schools did not make it because of a few logistical problems as the dates clash with two other primary school tournaments in Bulawayo and Harare and we are working on moving the dates so that we get all the primary participating.
“The idea is to try and grow this tournament to be as big as Cottco but for primary schools. We are committed to this tournament,” Mloiswa said.
