I was really troubled by violent protests which occurred in Harare’s Central Business District (CBD) last Friday, 29 September 2017, where members of a social movement, #Tajamuka which is led by Promise Mkwananzi attacked vehicles, buildings and some innocent citizens who were going about their business in town.
In as much as protesting is a democratic right in Zimbabwe, #Tajamuka social movement has proved that it is an enemy of liberal democracy. Firstly, their demonstration was disorderly and violently, pointing to some nefarious agenda in the cover of protests.
I was also saddened to see a number of retailers losing their wares to these protesters. Most retail shops closed and business came to a standstill for about an hour as retailers were in fear of losing their commodities.
#Tajamuka activists should be reminded that their violent acts, will definitely scare aware potential investors who may want to invest in the country, defeating their purported reason for protesting “economic revival”.
like to applaud the police for their continuous efforts in monitoring and maintaining peace in the country, especially during such violent protests.
Lastly, it should be made clear that any act of violence is a proof of economic sabotage. And as such, Mkwananzi and allies should be warned against such violence.
