A teenager was lucky to escape jail after he was convicted of indulging in sex with a minor by Guruve resident magistrate yesterday.
The 17-year-old, Professor Svembere of Chikwidibe village in Guruve appeared before resident magistrate Shingirai Mutiro and pleaded guilty to sleeping with a 13-year-old girl.
According to public prosecutor Ms Spiwe Makarichi, Svembere had unprotected sex with the minor two times inside their kitchen hut sometime in May 2018.
The matter came to light after the mother of the minor observed some stones inside her kitchen and asked where they came from, she was told by her son that the stones were thrown by Svembere as a sign of awakening the minor for sex.
The magistrate sentenced him to 12 months imprisonment, which was wholly suspended on condition of good behaviour considering his age and moral being.
In passing the sentence Mutiro said , “You started committing crime at the deep end, you are lucky that you are still young hence a custodial sentence will be too harsh on you considering the investigations carried out by the probation officer on your social welfare.”
“12 months imprisonment wholly suspended for a period of 5 years on which if convicted of sexually related crimes within the five years they will be added and you will be convicted without the option of a fine.”
